Bringing The Full MSG Experience To Everyone

For those with sensory disorders, coming to The Garden is a thrilling experience, but it can be a bit overwhelming. MSG now addresses their needs, making the venue more inclusive than ever.

Dr. Julian Maha began his work with a question: How can we help children and families confronting autism and other sensory disorders feel less isolated, to pull them into life’s normal routines and pleasures?

The Madison Square Garden Company is addressing the question head-on. With the goal of embracing all its guests so they can experience MSG in full, The Garden has introduced a range of special services. Partnering with KultureCity, a Birmingham, Alabama organization founded by Dr. Maha, The Garden is addressing what he calls “here and now” needs — steps that can make day-to-day activities more accessible.

It’s important to note, as well, that these services may also be useful for guests with other medical conditions, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida and Down syndrome. Adults, including those affected by a stroke or post-traumatic stress disorder, may also find these services helpful.

Here’s what The Garden is doing:

  • Guest Services ambassadors and security personnel throughout The Garden have received specialized training to help them identify and guide those needing assistance to the suitable resources.
  • The Garden is offering Sensory Bags to assist guests who may be overwhelmed by the venue’s sights and sounds. The bags hold a special fidget tool and noise-canceling headphones to help guests adjust to lights and other stimulation.
  • Seating areas affording extra space will be designated for guests with sensory disorders, who may otherwise feel confined.
  • Guests with sensory needs now have access to a “quiet space” located at the Guest Experience Office near Section 117 on the Madison Concourse.

Sports and entertainment can be a great healer and unifier, and so these steps have an added benefit, enabling families to bring all their children to games and concerts. They can now experience The Garden together.
